PROMINENT ROLE FOR CYBERSECURITY

PROMINENT ROLE FOR CYBERSECURITY

Cybersecurity is a hot topic and crucial for protecting data and sensitive information. A successful cyberattack can lead to data theft, financial losses, reputational damage and even business closure. That is why we are investing in robust
cybersecurity measures so that we properly protect our data, ensure business continuity and maintain our customers' trust.

REDUCE RISK AND PROMOTE RESILIENCE

Zijderlaan's policy in this area is set forth in the Cybersecurity Strategy 2024. This strategy is all about reducing risk and promoting resilience. This has given security a prominent role within our overall ICT policy. Some examples of changes we have already implemented in recent years are: Multi-Factor Authentication, Endpoint Protection Management, Geofencing, automated updates and firewalls and awareness training for our employees. These steps belong to what is known as Security by Default, which is created by taking all processes to a higher maturity level, and Privacy by Design, where we consider data protection from the very beginning in the "design". In addition, we have periodically participated in phishing campaigns and have penetration tests performed once a year.

MONITOR AND ANTICIPATE

Our cybersecurity strategy is based on a combination of cybersecurity guidelines. Our framework consists of 4 phases:

  1. Identify
  2. Protect
  3. Detect
  4. Recover

In doing so, keeping "continuous visibility" runs like a thread through this process. By continuously measuring the activity of the network, our users and systems, we can monitor the effectiveness of our cybersecurity measures. Under the
assumption that security incidents are inevitable, it is necessary to detect, respond to and remediate the potential intrusions in a timely manner. There are examples of companies in transport & logistics that have been hit by an attack and were only able to resume their operations after (over) a week, often after paying a 'ransom'. This is why we will continue to invest in ICT and especially security in the coming years. Important here is a clear ICT policy and the ability to anticipate threats and attacks. We continue to perform regular risk analyses and investigate the impact of possible risks. This enables us to take the right measures, appropriate to our organization. In addition, we make backups of our data in various ways and test them regularly, thus preventing the loss of valuable information and enabling us to recover quickly if our data is compromised.

FOCUS

The ambitions for the coming years are mostly determined by rapid technological developments and threats. Our focus will include separating and categorizing data to reduce risks, as well as also looking at further automating crucial, primary processes.

Zijderlaan opts for sustainable growth in logistics

To be able to continue as an organization to respond to the growing logistics demand of our customers, we are investing in the construction of an entirely new distribution center in Dinteloord. The DC is ideally situated along the A4 motorway, centrally located between the ports of Antwerp, Rotterdam and Moerdijk. On a 6-hectare plot, we will realize a 'BREEAM Outstanding' certified building in four phases over the next few years. The construction of phase 1 will start in February 2024.

PUBLIC WAREHOUSE

With an area of 15,000 m2, phase 1 will be set up as a public warehouse. Leo Lokker, Commercial and Operational Director at Zijderlaan: "For a number of years now, we have seen an increased need to hold higher stocks in Europe and thereby become less vulnerable and less dependent on just-in-time deliveries from other continents. As a logistics service provider and strategic partner, we want to meet this growing need for storage space, from both existing and new customers. With our envisaged 'narrow-aisle storage' where we will use man-up trucks, we can easily accommodate 28,750 pallets in this first phase."

STRATEGIC EXPANSION

The investment in this logistics expansion is seen as a unique opportunity to ensure the continuity of our family business. "With the development of this new distribution center, we are consciously giving hands and feet to the strategic policy of our organization, "says Sabine Zijderlaan, Managing Director. "Focusing on growth in logistics activities, alongside the continuation of our transport activities, is one of our spearheads. With the realization of this project, we can organize all logistics processes within the chain even more specifically according to customer requirements."

EXCEPTIONALLY DURABLE

Sustainability and innovation are also very important, strategic pillars within our company. This is why our building is being built at the highest BREEAM certification level for sustainability (Outstanding). With this, the building meets very strict requirements in the areas of energy efficiency, water use, materials, health and well-being of users and ecology, among others. "Our ambition to achieve the highest possible level in innovation and sustainability is reflected in our building. Furthermore, we are investigating the possibilities of electrifying part of our vehicle fleet and creating a charging plaza that is also accessible to third parties," said Sabine Zijderlaan.

BLENDING INTO THE LANDSCAPE

In the design, we paid extra attention to the color scheme to integrate the building naturally into the landscape. In doing so, we chose high-quality and durable materials. The natural light, the volumes that seem to float and the recognizable main entrance are further unique features of our property. The entire site will be finished with various green spaces, which will benefit the biodiversity and living environment.

FOLLOWING CONSTRUCTION PHASES: BUILD-TO-SUIT

We make it possible to develop phases 2 through 4 completely customized to the customer's requirements. Due to the licensed heights of 20 to 30 meters, these construction phases are suitable for a fully automated warehouse including pallet cranes. Our goal is to realize a total warehouse area of 33,000 m2 with space for 70,000 pallets by 2040.

The first phase of our distribution center in Dinteloord is expected to be operational in the second quarter of 2025.

Cefetra and Zijderlaan continue joint sustainable mission

Rotterdam/Stolwijk, June 1st, 2023

One year of using Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO): a saving of 730 tons of CO2 emissions. That, in short, is what agricultural commodity supplier Cefetra and logistics service provider Zijderlaan have achieved together by choosing this alternative, fossil-free fuel in 2022. They are proud of that! The success was not a one-time action, because in 2023 Zijderlaan will continue to fill up with HVO for all of Cefetra's shipments driven within the Netherlands. That amounts to some 230,000 liters per year.

Cefetra looks back very positively on the first year of extended cooperation with Zijderlaan and the use of HVO. Ruben Kraaijeveld, Operations Manager Cefetra B.V.: "It has further strengthened the awareness and urgency of the sustainable path we are on. Our customers appreciate this initiative and the pioneering role we are taking in the sector. We have stood for this for 35 years and look forward to continuing to follow this path in the future together with our customers, suppliers and employees and achieve great goals."

Leo Lokker, Commercial & Operations Director at logistics service provider Zijderlaan: "We greatly appreciate the fact that Cefetra was the first to dare to take the step to go full HVO. Together, as sustainability ambassadors, we hope to motivate other companies to make structural changes in their organizations and thus improve their carbon footprint.
Intensifying our sustainable cooperation is very important for the logistics energy transition. The choice of HVO nicely reflects our joint ambition to excel in sustainability."

Sustainable mission

"Cefetra has always been at the forefront when it comes to sustainability," explains Sandra Kraaij, Sustainability Manager at Cefetra B.V.. "We think it is important to consider what further steps we can take to make transport and the products we supply more sustainable. We like to do this in cooperation with other stakeholders, in this case with Zijderlaan. We are proud to have achieved a CO2 reduction together and continue to look at how we can optimize transport even further."

"The sustainability theme fits well within the culture of our family business," says Sabine Zijderlaan, Managing Director. "We think it is important to invest in a sustainable future. Not only for our business operations, but precisely for the preservation of a healthy and beautiful living environment."
Zijderlaan continues: "We never achieve great sustainability results alone. Organization-wide, we pay continuous attention to this. From the driver's capabilities to the purchase of new vehicles with fuel-efficient engines. We also constantly bring the sustainability discussion to the attention of our clients. Reducing CO2 emissions can be achieved in many different ways, as long as together you are open to it and willing to invest. This can be done financially, for example by paying a surcharge for HVO, through research into optimization opportunities within the chain, by looking at various modes of transport or by engaging a sustainability consultant. Anything is possible!"

Road to zero emissions

Cefetra is convinced that Zijderlaan is a good partner to continue to follow developments for making road transport more sustainable and to take the next steps together in the future. Kraaij: "There are still many challenges on the road to electrically or hydrogen powered trucks for heavy transport. Until that happens, we will continue to use HVO to make our transport more sustainable.

Lokker: "We see HVO as the most important measure during the transition to the possible new energy carriers. We can quickly reduce a lot of CO2 with it. However, we do need the support and commitment of our clients for this. We aim to drive 25% of our total volumes on HVO by 2025."

Zijderlaan recently earned the 2nd Lean & Green Star Award for their sustainable efforts. Maik Backx, Sustainability Consultant: "This great recognition shows that we are actively working on many fronts to reduce CO2 emissions, with the long-term goal of offering our services in transport and logistics emission-free."

50th place Top 100 Logistics

Zijderlaan has risen to 50th place in the Top 100 Logistics! Our ranking in the Top 50 as an SME shows that we really make a difference in the field of sustainable innovations. Together, we are 'Constantly on the move' (our slogan: voortdurend in beweging) every day. Focus and perseverance organisation-wide have led to important steps of improvement. We are proud that our sustainable efforts have been rewarded!

The ranking is compiled by Buck Consultants International (BCI) and Logistiek.nl. This year they paid more attention to the most innovative companies. In addition to the 'hard' indicators such as turnover in Euros, number of permanent employees and number of square metres of warehousing (70% of total score), the degree of innovation was also assessed on six different themes (30% of total score). These six themes are: sustainable transport, sustainable warehousing, labour & training, smart warehousing, use of digital platforms and chain management.

Distinguishing factors of Zijderlaan in the field of innovations in logistics processes include:

  • Participation in Lean & Green programme (on the way to 2nd (and/or 3rd) Star award)
  • Working with our customers to capitalise on sustainable optimisation opportunities in the supply chain
  • Use of HVO100 as a fossil-free fuel (also read this article about our sustainable collaboration with agricultural raw materials supplier Cefetra B.V.)
  • Compensation of remaining diesel emissions through Shell's NBS compensation programme. This means we will be driving climate-neutrally from this year onwards
  • Completely new premises for our Truck and Trailer Service, built in accordance with the BENG standard (Bijna Energie Neutraal Gebouw - Nearly Energy Neutral Building)
  • Modern fleet with the aim of only using Euro 6 trucks (or more economical) by the end of 2023
  • Participation in HyTrucks hydrogen project
  • Participation in projects for multimodal transport - including 'The Green Heart Corridor'
  • Continuous analysis of driving performance (consumption figures), training our drivers and optimising planning processes
  • Solar panels, heat pump

These sustainability initiatives and innovations help us to remain "Constantly Green on the Move" (from our slogan: voortdurend groen in beweging) in this dynamic sector. Together with our customers, we are moving towards a CO2-neutral logistics service. Would you like to know what else we do or what we can do for you? Third generation of Zijderlaan takes the lead

In September 2021 we announced that as from 1 January 2022 Zijderlaan will be managed by the third generation. Wim Zijderlaan is stepping down as managing director and Sabine & Tim Zijderlaan are taking over the helm. To safeguard Zijderlaan's future and continuity, Sabine and Tim opted to complete the management team with an external professional. Leo Lokker has been appointed commercial & operational director since 1 September 2021.

What is it like to be the 3rd generation to lead Zijderlaan?

"We are proud that, as the third generation, we have been given the confidence to continue our family business. A great opportunity with great responsibilities. For 85 years our people have been the driving force within our company. Each and every one of them passionate and professional employees who are prepared to go that extra mile for the customer. As long as we are able to maintain this together, we can continue to make a real difference in our field."

Which of Wim's qualities will you be taking over in your business operations?

"One of the things Wim has taught us in recent years is to always look ahead. Not always easy, but necessary to determine your course. A dot on the horizon helps to keep focus and to better anticipate opportunities that come your way."

What do you continue to focus on?

"It is important that we continue to build on our distinctive character. Anyone can provide that ride from A to B or store goods in any DC. It is precisely that extra step and our proactive customer approach that makes the difference. The fact that we are invited to our customers' tables more often and at an earlier stage to help them think about the design of their (sustainable) strategy is proof that this personal form of service is appreciated. This is a wonderful and rewarding development within our range of services, which we are keen to continue pursuing in the future at Zijderlaan."

What is on the agenda?

"The first priority is to concretise our strategy for the coming years. We also want to take a close look at our service provision and client portfolio to see whether we are still providing the right and desired service. Another important subject is the simplification of our current administrative procedures, in which further automation and customer integration are essential. As you can read under the heading "Grip on growth", this process has already started. The main objective is to create more organisational space across all departments so that we can continue to work together on the future of our company in a logical and focused way.”

How do you see the future?

"With a great deal of confidence. A good foundation has been laid in recent years that we would like to build on. In 2021, we will see the logistics market changing around us at a furious pace. This means that we are facing an interesting and exciting time, in which the environment (sustainability) will become an increasingly important and greater focus, in which it will be increasingly difficult to find good staff, in which the presence of necessary raw materials is no longer taken for granted, and in which customers demand and expect more from us. We do not see these challenges as a danger, however, but rather as an opportunity. As a healthy family business, with a clear strategic vision, we can certainly anticipate this."
"We sometimes jokingly say that Zijderlaan is 'broadly specialised'. This may not sound logical, but it is a fact. Our specialisms in all three transport divisions, supplemented by the added value we offer in our DCs, means we are able to scale up during campaigns and adapt to customer-specific wishes and issues. Naturally, we always retain the well-known Zijderlaan mentality, a family business where people are proud to work.

What is your point of view of the developments in the transport and logistics sector?

"The developments are exciting to say the least, but we are convinced that Zijderlaan can continue to distinguish itself. We may have to make choices which we would never have thought of before, such as driving on alternative fuels, implementing far-reaching automation in our fleet and with our customers and/or offering transport by multiple modes. One thing is certain: we must remain alert and make adjustments in order to be able to guarantee the continuity of our services. Operating flexibly within the dynamic logistics market, following new legislation and regulations and occasionally responding to opportunities or challenges that contribute to the further growth and professionalism of our company."

First impression of Zijderlaan

Leo Lokker: "I am very impressed with our company and with the dedication of everyone in his or her field. Everyone is proud to work for Zijderlaan. I am especially pleasantly surprised by the open and informal culture and cooperation and feel completely at home in this enterprising family business."

Cefetra opts for fossil-free HVO diesel at Zijderlaan

Rotterdam/Stolwijk, January 20th, 2022 - Agricultural raw materials supplier Cefetra and logistics service provider Zijderlaan are going a step further in their sustainable cooperation. As of January 1st, 2022, Cefetra will choose the fossil-free fuel HVO100 for all cargoes driven within the Netherlands. This change will immediately result in a CO2 reduction of between 80 and 90%. An important and sustainable development in the logistics energy transition.

Bridge to the future

Ruben Kraaijeveld, Operations Manager at Cefetra B.V.: "Cefetra is a pioneer in the field of sustainability and is therefore holding discussions with many stakeholders to determine how we can further improve the sustainability of our products, services and processes. Together with Zijderlaan we have drawn up objectives that correspond with the strategy of both companies. Part of this is making our transport more sustainable, with the choice of HVO diesel at Zijderlaan now being a major step."

Sabine Zijderlaan, Managing Director of Zijderlaan said, "Cefetra is our first client to switch completely to HVO. Also, within Zijderlaan we continuously steer towards CO2 reduction and compensation. One of the options available to our clients is to opt for HVO. This fossil-free fuel immediately results in a CO2 reduction of up to 90%, viewed 'Well-to-Wheel'. A very nice score during the transition to completely emission-free heavy road transport. Whether hydrogen or electric are the future, we and our customers will follow the developments in sustainability closely. In the meantime, we remain actively committed to improving our footprint as much as possible and to achieving common environmental goals together with our customers."

Benefits of HVO

"A major advantage of Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) is that it can be used immediately," explains Maik Backx, sustainability consultant at Zijderlaan. "The fuel is suitable for every Euro 5 and 6 diesel engine without having to make any modifications. HVO has a similar chemical composition as fossil diesel, but without impurities. Also, the lower emission of harmful emissions such as particulates, hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide and PAHs is better for local air quality and for the engine."

Sustainable cooperation

On an annual basis, Zijderlaan drives some 500,000 kilometers for all Cefetra's cargoes in the Netherlands. "The price of HVO is considerably higher than fossil diesel, but we are prepared to invest in it," says Ted Swinkels, general manager of Cefetra B.V. "It's nice to see that the trucks of Zijderlaan transport our protein-rich flour, derived from oilseeds, as cargo and at the same time fill up this alternative fuel, derived from the same oilseed. Our goal is to be completely climate neutral by 2030. This will enable us to take an important step in making transport and therefore our business operations more sustainable." Sabine Zijderlaan: "In addition to HVO, we continue to look together for other sustainable optimization opportunities. Through current and intensive data exchange, for example, we calculate the most efficient use of our materials and planning. We hope that many will follow our example within transport and logistics on the way to a CO2-neutral society."

Zijderlaan in Top 100 Logistics Services

During a VIP dinner in Utrecht on Wednesday the 19th of June the new Top 100 Logistics Services 2019 was announced. Zijderlaan is ranked in this list of impressive logistic companies also. The indexation is based on three main indicators: 'number of employees', 'net turnover' and 'number of square metres warehousing' (30% each). The sustainability indicators 'participation Lean and Green programme' and 'amount of BREEAM certified warehouses' count for 5% each. We opened our BREEAM certified warehouse in Puttershoek in 2014. Because of the realisation of this new warehouse, we optimised our transport flows. We realized a CO2 reduction of approximately 24% in 2016 compared to 2011. Therefore we received the Lean & Green Award.

We are very satisfied with our Top 100 quotation and we keep striving to do business sustainably.

Grain harvest 2018

September 2018 -

Because of the sunny weather this year the combine harvesters could start early in July. Meanwhile all the grain is harvested and the grain campaign has come to an end. The harvest this year is a bit less than previous seasons, but the product has a very high quality.

Zijderlaan transported large volumes this year as well for the companies CZAV, Agrifirm and Van Iperen. Our trucks drove especially in the southwest and the center of The Netherlands. In this video of Capture Productions you can see the harvest with a New Holland CX5080. The combine unloads the grain into a tipper truck of Zijderlaan.

CO2 aware and active with CO2 footprint

Zijderlaan strives to do business sustainably. By taking deliberate measures that not only reduce costs, but reduce environmental impact at the same time, Zijderlaan is optimising its (sustainable) transport. Partly because of this, Zijderlaan has participated in the Lean and Green Connekt Programme in the last five years. For the coming years, Zijderlaan has prepared a CO2 footprint and related reduction plan to monitor and reduce CO2 emissions.

What did we achieve already?
For the Lean and Green programme Zijderlaan realized a CO2 reduction of approximately 24% in 2016 compared to 2011. The measures taken by Zijderlaan to achieve these savings are:

  • Course “Het Nieuwe Rijden” (The New Driving) for all drivers;
  • Reducing empty mileage by intensifying cooperation with clients and transport partners;
  • A new distribution centre that optimises transport flows (BREEAM certified);
  • Conscious choice to use lighter materials, which increases loading capacity within the authorised total mass of the vehicle.

What's next?
Towards the future, an active CO2 reduction policy and monitoring of activities should continue to take place. For this reason, Zijderlaan has chosen to once again draw up a reduction plan, this time organisation-wide in the form of a so-called CO2 Performance ladder. The CO2 performance ladder is a certified measuring instrument to provide companies with insight into their CO2 emissions. A part of the CO2performance ladder is the making of a CO2 footprint. This footprint maps the overall emissions of the entire organisation (per scope). In addition, this footprint leads to the goal of ensuring that the company's overall goal is to achieve a transparent reduction of its CO2 emissions, according to a set goal and reduction measures.

The Zijderlaan customer segment does not yet make it necessary to choose a certifiedCO2 Performance ladder. Zijderlaan processes its consumption figures in a CO2 reduction box. This CO2 reduction box is focused on the custom CO2 footprint and corresponding reduction plan.

Reduction plan 2016-2020

The plan of action has set new objectives and implemented measures that can provide the necessary reduction. The following objectives are described in the Action Plan.

Zijderlaan has the goal for itself of achieving the following CO2 reduction in the next 5 years, measured from the reference year 2014.

CO2 reduction goal Zijderlaan for 2020
Zijderlaan wants to reduce 5% less CO2 in 2020 than 2014

CO2 reduction goal Zijderlaan for 2040
Zijderlaan wants to reduce 30% less CO2 in 2040 than 2014

Objective per emission flow:

100% CO2 reduction electricity
5% CO2 reduction gas
5% CO2 reduction fuel

Sub-targets:

FUEL ECONOMY COMMERCIAL VEHICLES
In order to reduce fuel consumption and the associated CO2 emissions, there has been an inventory of how much fuel can be reduced with the company cars, based with possible reduction measures. An estimate has been made that a minimum of 5% reduction by 2020 should be achievable. This reduction is related to the total number of transported tonnages in kilograms.

GAS CONSUMPTION OFFICES
In order to reduce gas consumption and the associated CO2 emissions, we have done an inventory of measures that apply to our business. We estimate that we can reduce our consumption and emissions by 5% over the next 3 years. In order to monitor this, progress is monitored by the number of square meters (m2).

ELECTRICITY USAGE OFFICES
Zijderlaan has the intention to purchase green energy for the buildings. This results in a reduction of 100% CO2 reduction. In addition, measures have been taken to reduce electricity consumption, such as installing LED lighting, optimising the climate systems, and, for example, purchasing an energy management system to prevent waste. In addition to reducing CO2 emissions, the goal is to reduce electricity consumption by 10%. In order to monitor this, progress is linked to the number of square meters (m2).

Progress CO2 reduction
Progress and measures are monitored on the basis of the number of tonnages transported and the number of square meters. In order to monitor the progress in diesel consumption, this will be linked to the transported tonnages (kilograms). To monitor the progress in gas and electricity consumption, this will be related to the number of m2. Zijderlaan has mainly focused on the CO2 reduction in diesel fuel consumption, as 98% of the total emissions are caused by our means of transportation. Of course, CO2 reduction of electricity and gas in the office and the DCs is constantly monitored and we will continue to look for improvement opportunities. Below you can find the results of our CO2 reduction in means of transport over the last 6 years.

REDUCTION POTENTIAL
Based on the footprint, the internal discussions and brainstorming session, a new package of measures has been prepared to further reduce the fuel, gas and electricity consumption, thereby reducing CO2 emissions.

  • Establish clear fleet policy inclusing:
    - Maximum CO2 emission and energy label of a passenger car
    - Engine type (Euro 5 or 6, electric)
    - Policy on alternative fuels
  • Frequently consulting the engine management system for a thorough understanding of consumption and driving behaviour. Preferably on license plate and personal level. In the coming years, the focus will be on the driving behaviour of the drivers. The actual standard consumption can be tested according to the standard usage of the factory.
  • Raise awareness among employees. Think about regular communication (toolboxes, newsletters) in the topic of:
    - Maintenance of the trucks
    - The unnecessary stationary running of trucks
    - Driving tips
    - Correct tire pressure
  • Purchasing green energy and taking energy efficient measures for the office and distribution centres.

The CO2 footprint results in organisational awareness of CO2, both in our own business and in carrying out our services. In addition, Zijderlaan's organisation is actively engaged in the realisation of energy savings and, where possible, makes efficient use of sustainable materials and energy.
